A Chinese national accused of hiding more than $5.2 million worth of the drug ice in dried cuttlefish has faced a Melbourne court.

Australian Federal Police arrested the 20-year-old man in Burwood on Friday after Australian Border Force officials identified five suspicious packages sent in the mail.

Police allege each package contained more than one kilogram of ice hidden within the dried cuttlefish.

Cuttlefish have a unique central shell and range from 15-25cm long.

Police also raided the man's Brunswick East home where they seized a 2012 Mercedes Benz coupe.

He faced court on Tuesday on numerous charges including importing controlled drugs and drug possession.

The maximum penalty for those offences is life imprisonment.
