Councillors 'king hit' as Melbourne meeting descends into chaos

A controversial decision over parking meters has led to violent scenes at a Melbourne council meeting, with two councillors violently attacked and left bloodied.

At a meeting last night, Maribyrnong Council decided controversial parking meters in Yarraville would not be removed , angering a crowd in the chamber.

Chaos erupted when a man lunged at the council bench and councillor Grant Miles was punched in the face.

The man then turned on fellow councillor Nam Quach, picking him up and body-slamming him head first on to the floor.

Deputy Mayor Catherine Cumming said she has been shaking and teary since the incident.

"I have been a councillor for 18 years and I have walked into my chamber, seen councillors bloody and bruised," Ms Cumming told 3AW radio today. 

"Who needs to be punched in the mouth, punched in the face and have hands around their throat over $1.80 parking?"

Community members leaving the council chamber after the incident were heard yelling, "What do you expect?"

Mr Quach was going to the aid of his colleague when he was attacked.

"I just lunged onto him and tried to restrain him as best I could," he said. 

"I was body-slammed head-first into the ground, lifted off my feet and slammed into the ground."

When Mr Quach let go, the man kicked him in the face and stomach.

The man left the meeting before police arrived but the council says it has video footage and photos.

A parking meter opponent criticised the violence at the council meeting.

"This is completely out of hand," Yarraville Village Says No to Paid Parking spokeswoman Megan Darling told 3AW.

But Ms Darling said the attack, and incidents in which parking meters have been hit with baseball bats and axes, shows Maribyrnong Council is ignoring ratepayers.

"Obviously, the path our council are taking is not working, and someone needs to be an adult here and sit down and sort this out. It's ridiculous," she said.
