COVID-19 testing completed for all locked-down Victorian towers

Coronavirus testing of all 3000 residents in Melbourne's nine housing towers already in lockdown has now been completed, the Victorian Health Department says.

Results are expected tomorrow, though it is unknown how long residents will have to stay in their apartments.

"Some very welcome, good news after a trying few days but the ordeal for these residents isn't over just yet," 9News Melbourne reporter Andrew Lund said tonight.

"Authorities are still working through those results. They have told residents that those results will be available tomorrow although it is likely to be in the later half of the day.

"(Residents have been told that) until we have those results and develop a clear plan to support anyone who tests positive or is a close contact, you will need to remain in your home.

"People have been told to stay in their flats in those estates since Saturday afternoon."

The state government had previously issued detention directions to residents of the towers for at least five days with the potential for it to run to 14 days, ending at 3.30pm on Saturday July 18.

Residents are not allowed to leave their apartments, with all food and toiletries delivered to their doors by health officials.

Mr Andrews said earlier today that the faster Victoria Health could test all residents, the faster they would be able to produce a "detailed plan" to reduce transmission of COVID-19 among residents.

"I think we need to have a complete picture across those towers, given that there are real communities of interest. There's patterns of movement. There's friendship groups. There's all those things," he said.

"And then once we've got the results, we'll be able to look at the actual data and then look at arrangements."

Overnight a further 75 confirmed cases of COVID-19 were found among residents.

Around 500 police officers are currently deployed across the nine towers in lockdown per day, with Protective Services Officers (PSOs) also set to join patrols moving forward.
