Victorian legal experts are due to discuss complex issues facing the judicial system in determining if someone is mentally fit to stand trial.

Judges and lawyers will speak in Melbourne on Saturday, looking in-depth at the Victorian Law Reform Commission's 2014 review of the legal tests which determine a prisoner's mental fitness to stand trial.

The review, lead by Phillip Cummins, made 107 recommendations including revising and clarifying the legal tests for unfitness to stand trial and the defence of mental impairment.

The symposium will explore the operation of the law, including what's changed after the review, and implications of the legislative changes currently before parliament.

Supreme Court judge Jane Dixon will be among those to make a presentation.
