A resident and firefighter have been taken to hospital after a suburban Melbourne unit fire was started by a cigarette.

A 45-year-old man was rescued from his home at Croydon on Monday afternoon, suffering deep burns to his back and hands, and a firefighter suffered a leg injury, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade said in a statement.

"The repair bill has been estimated at approximately $50,000 and the cause was due to a poorly discarded cigarette," the MFB added.
