Christmas shoppers flock to Vic Market

Victorians hoping to gobble the freshest turkeys and prawns on Christmas Day will be setting their alarms early to hit the markets on Saturday.

More than 60,000 people are set to flock to Queen Victoria Market to shop for their supplies ahead of Christmas Day on Sunday.

The market is expecting a hectic day with 2500 turkeys, 15 tonnes of prawns, 10,000 dozen oysters and 2000 hams likely to be sold.

Thousands of shoppers also flocked to the market on Friday evening with an extended night-time opening for the first time in its 138-year history.

EXPECTED MARKET SALES DURING CHRISTMAS PERIOD:

* 20 tonnes of prawns

* 10,000 dozen oysters

* Five tonnes of crayfish

* 3000 turkeys

* 15 tonnes of ham

* 6300 kg of cherries
