A Melbourne man has been charged with trying to spy on customers in a fast food outlet's toilet cubical via a hidden camera.

The 28-year-old Heathmont man allegedly set up the device to secretly film inside the Wantirna restaurant's lavatory in September. Another man had noticed the camera on the floor and the incident was reported to police.

The man will face a magistrates court in June charged with using an optical surveillance device to record a private activity without consent.
