A Melbourne man has been charged with conduct endangering life, accused of being behind a terrifying road rage attack in which two women in their 60s were abused.

The 27-year-old Craigieburn man was arrested and charged on Tuesday over the incident on the Tullamarine Freeway.

It will be alleged Leigh Mahady, 62, was driving on Saturday when a truckie began tailgating her and tooting his horn before side-swiping her.

She pulled over so she and her friend Julie Dougherty, 60, could inspect the damage when the truck driver confronted them, armed with a hammer and a stick.

The man then allegedly pushed Ms Dougherty down.

The man has been remanded in custody to appear in Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on Wednesday, also charged with threats to kill and assault with a weapon.
