Charges over Melbourne paramedic attack

Two women and a teenage boy have been charged with an attack on two paramedics in Melbourne's north that left one needing surgery.

The male paramedic was knocked to the ground up to four times and broke his foot during Thursday night's attack in Reservoir.

Two paramedics arrived at a call out at 6.30pm to find two women helping a disoriented man.

The women left but returned with a young male and then allegedly attacked the paramedics.

"He was kicked and punched repeatedly and knocked to the ground three or four times and unfortunately in one of the instances when he fell he's broken his foot quite badly," Ambulance Victoria's Mick Stephenson told reporters on Friday.

The paramedic was due to have surgery on Friday.

A 19-year-old Reservoir woman has been charged with assault-related offences and has been remanded to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday.

A 30-year-old Epping woman has been charged with assault, theft and traffic-related offences and has been remanded to appear in the same court, also on Saturday.

A 15-year-old boy has been charged with assault and theft-related offences and has been remanded to appear in a childrens court on Monday.

Police also allege the suspects rammed the ambulance before fleeing.

Mr Stephenson said violence towards paramedics was unacceptable.

"We have an incident reported once a day, although we believe there to be significant under-reporting from our paramedics and they are exposed to it more often than that," he said.

Ambulance Union state secretary Steve McGhie said paramedics needed more security.

"There may need to be a trial of body cameras for their own safety. I mean it won't stop these incidents but it will help catch the perpetrators," Mr McGhie said.

"We can't have a workplace where our paramedics are exposed to this risk, but it's ongoing and unpredictable."
