A man has taken a chainsaw to a power pole before barricading himself in a Melbourne house and throwing lit fireworks at police.

The man attacked the power pole in Melton South before going into a nearby house when police arrived about 9am on Friday, officers say.

Police spent more than six hours trying to communicate with the man, who threw "several lit, small fireworks" at them during the stand-off.

Critical Incident Response Unit officers entered the house just after 3pm and arrested the man aged in his 30s.

He has minor injuries.

A girl, 15, was also arrested.

Powercor said the power pole suffered only minor damage and electricity, which was switched off on Friday morning, should be restored to the area on Friday afternoon.
