Lack of lubrication, too much friction and tight curves have been blamed for the wheel wear problems that caused months of disruptions on Victoria's regional transport network.

V/Line on Saturday released the findings of an independent report into what caused the wheel wear problems that led to the cancellation of hundreds of regional services since January.

The review by Monash University's Institute of Railway Technology found a combination of tight curves, high friction due to the absence of lubrication, and worn wheels and rail caused the wheel wear.
