About 30 patients in a Melbourne hospital have been evacuated from a ward after a car reversed into an external wall.

The car crashed into the Broadmeadows Hospital about 10pm on Monday, significantly damaging the rear wall. The driver, a 63-year-old Malmsbury woman, was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital for observation.

Melbourne Fire Brigade say the wall will have to be shored up before the car can be removed and the structure will have to be checked before the patients can be moved back.
