Teen who fell into waters off Victoria's west coast identified as local schoolboy

A teenager still missing after being swept out to sea off Victoria's west coast has been identified as local schoolboy, Lauchlon Humphries.

The search for the teenager entered its third day, with police, SES and rescue crews focusing on a 10 kilometre section of the coastline.

Humphries, 14, and his friend were exploring rockpools at Cape Bridgewater, near Portland, on Tuesday when a wave knocked them into the water.

He didn't make it back to shore, while his 15-year-old friend managed to hold onto a rock.

His friend raised the alarm calling emergency services about 7.30pm.

Authorities yesterday continued to search the stretch of coastline, extending several kilometres out to sea in the hope of finding the missing boy.

Victoria Police inspector Steve Thompson said search crews hadn't given up hope and were still hoping to find the boy alive.

"Obviously the more time that goes by, we're becoming more concerned, but at this point in time we're treating it as a search and rescue," he said.

The blowholes, which features a gravel walkway to view the rock formations, is a popular spot for locals.

Cape Bridgewater is located near Portland, about 65 kilometres from the South Australian border, and 364km away from Melbourne.

The 15-year-old boy was treated at the Portland Hospital and is believed to have suffered injuries to his upper body and legs.

The coastline is notoriously unpredictable.

"By nature, the ocean and inland waters are unpredictable and this is a reminder to us all," Thompson said.
