Several businesses have been warned to clean up their act after metals and chemicals were found running into a Melbourne creek.

The Environment Protection Authority conducted tests on Mordialloc Creek in Moorabbin and found elevated levels of zinc, copper and chromium, which are having an impact on wildlife.

After inspecting 30 businesses along the creek, the EPA issued warning notices to three businesses, which will be fined if they fail to improve their waste water controls and chemical storage.
