A life-size bronze statue of a woman representing the female carers of war veterans has been chopped off at the ankles and stolen in Melbourne.
The statue, a bronze World War One era woman known as Rosemary, went missing on Tuesday night from Victory Park in Ascot Vale, Moonee Valley Council says.
The bronze statue was only unveiled six months ago and represents the women who provided care to war veterans with little or no recognition - often for decades.
"This is a heartless act and I urge anyone who might have information, or may have seen or heard something suspicious around that time to contact the Moonee Ponds police," Moonee Valley Mayor Andrea Surace said.
