Mark 'Bomber' Thompson: Drug trial delayed for expert DNA evidence

A Melbourne court hearing for former Essendon premiership captain and coach Mark "Bomber" Thompson on drugs charges has been delayed.

Thompson, 55, currently faces three charges of drug trafficking and four counts of drug possession.

A magnetic lock box containing MDMA, ice, Xanax and a single LSD tab along with Thompson's DNA were allegedly found during a police raid at his Port Melbourne home in January last year.

His defence lawyer Peter Matthews previously said the former star player and coach would fight the charges.

Thompson was present in Melbourne Magistrates Court today, supported by a number of family members.

However, a police prosecutor said the case needed to be adjourned to allow for evidence from a DNA expert.

He added the prosecution and defence teams had resolved a number of issues and agreed on most facts, meaning the contested hearing would be reduced from three days to one.

The hearing will continue on Wednesday, with two to three prosecution witnesses, including the DNA expert.

Prosecutors flagged they would also apply to amend two of Thompson's charges.
