Bomb making materials were found in the Melbourne home of Jake Bilardi, police have confirmed, but there were no explosive devices.

There have been reports the teenager had left improvised explosive devices in his Craigieburn home before leaving Australia in 2014, and these were found by his family.

Late on Thursday, a Victoria Police spokeswoman said only precursor chemicals were discovered at the property.

She said police first became aware of Bilardi when he was reported as a missing person late last year.

"Inquiries in connection to this report revealed he had travelled overseas to the Middle East," the police spokeswoman said.

"A subsequent search of his Craigieburn home uncovered chemicals that could be used to construct an explosive device.

"No actual explosive device was located by police."

Bilardi was reportedly killed in a suicide bomb attack in Iraq on Wednesday, although his death is yet to be officially confirmed.
