A Comanchero bikie gang member has admitted to dousing a Melbourne strip club in petrol and setting it ablaze.

Mark Ahern, 32, pleaded guilty to arson in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

The gang treasurer used a stolen BMW to drive to the Kittens Strip Club in Caulfield in the early hours of February 16, 2016, court documents show.

He and a co-accused climbed through an air vent into the club, poured petrol onto the floor of a kitchen and storeroom and set it alight, before climbing back out.

Ahern was injured during the arson and his blood was found on a wheelie bin and back fence near the scene, the documents say.

The damage to the business was estimated at almost $870,000 and 43 firefighters were needed to battle the fire.

Ahern was remanded in custody and will next appear in the County Court on April 5, 2017, for a plea hearing.
