Bendigo Mosque gets green light as High Court throws out appeal

The High Court has rejected an appeal against the Bendigo mosque, allowing the project to go ahead.

Two residents from Bendigo have been ardently fighting the planned mosque, arguing the local council failed to fully investigate the social effect, taking the matter to the High Court, after it passed the City of Greater Bendigo, Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and Victorian Court of Appeal..

The plan for the mosque made headlines last year, when rival groups protesting the proposed idea turned violent.

The Australian Islamic Mission first applied for the mosque on Rowena Street in 2013, with various appeals launched since.

The October protests escalated between anti-racism groups and the United Patriots Front, calling for a heavy police presence to extinguish spot fires and make four arrests for weapons offences and minor assaults.

The decision was handed down at 9.45am today, with the Bendigo Advertiser reporting all legal avenues have now been exhausted.
