'Extremely serious': Vandals damage $100,000 worth of art, statues at Bendigo museum

Investigations are underway after two people allegedly damaged $100,000 worth of statues and painting at a museum in central Victoria earlier this month.

Police believe a man and woman attended the Bendigo Golden Dragon Museum on Bridge Street about 1.30pm on May 5.

Investigators believe the duo "used liquid" to cause damage to multiple statues and paintings, worth around $100,000.

Statues, stonework, temple artifacts, artwork, and parading dragons were targeted, according to the museum.

It is believed the pair also damaged a dozen statues at a nearby Buddhist monument, the Great Stupa, on the same day.

Police said the pair were with two children and left the scene in a silver Toyota Prado.

Golden Dragon Museum general manager Hugo Leschen said the attack was troubling.

"An attack of this nature, on culturally sensitive objects that have high heritage significance, is extremely serious and hugely upsetting and disappointing for our staff, the local Chinese community and everyone who takes pride in Bendigo's unique history," he said.

Investigators have released images of two people they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.
