Bayley takes Vic Legal Aid fight to court

Serial sex attacker and convicted murderer Adrian Bayley is taking Victoria Legal Aid to court over its refusal to pay for his legal bid to get out of jail sooner.

Bayley is challenging Legal Aid's refusal to fund his Victorian Supreme Court appeals over three rapes he committed before he murdered Melbourne woman Jill Meagher.

The 35-year-non-parole period Bayley received after raping and murdering Ms Meagher was extended to a minimum of 43 years after he was convicted for the rape of three more women.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews supports Legal Aid's decision to not fund Bayley's appeals.

"I think Legal Aid has made exactly the right call," Mr Andrews told reporters.

"I support them in defending the judgments they have made to deny Adrian Bayley any public resources at all (and) if the government needs to join that action then we will."

Opposition leader Matthew Guy said the Victorian community had "had enough" of Bayley.

"I don't think anyone has any sympathy, now this has been through the courts, he's been sentenced and to cause even more heartache for the family of Jill Meagher and indeed for the entire community I just think is despicable."
