Baby born on Melbourne freeway

One couple had to throw out their birthing plans when the newest member of their family decided to make her arrive in the middle of a busy Melbourne freeway.

The mum and dad were on their way to hospital for the birth but had to improvise when it came a bit sooner than expected.

The father, who was driving, had to pull over into the emergency lane of the Westgate Freeway and start delivery his wife's baby.

Paramedics arrived in minutes to assist.

Ambulance Victoria's John Hinton said the couple had left their run to the hospital "a bit late".

"I think they were a bit surprised," he said.

"It wasn't their first baby and so sometimes the second baby comes a bit quicker."

Mother and daughter are both doing fine and have been taken to the Royal Women's Hospital.
