Premier Daniel Andrews has paid tribute to Victorian and US defence personnel, laying a wreath during Memorial Day commemorations in New York City.

Mr Andrews joined American dignitaries, including Chief of Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to mark the sombre occasion during his official tour of the United States.

"It was a great honour to attend the Memorial Day service on behalf of Victorians, to remember those who have fallen in defence of our freedom and to reflect that our forces have always stood side by side with our American allies," Mr Andrews said.
