A man accused of leaking private financial information to the media about alleged branch stacking within the Victorian Labor party could face legal action.

Private credit card records were leaked to The Age newspaper by Eric Dearricott, a long-time anti-branch stacking activist within the ALP, that showed some members had not paid for their own membership.

Almost 200 people were kicked out of the party on Thursday night, and another 250 are facing dispute proceedings about why someone else paid for them.

Labor's lawyers have ordered Mr Dearricott to destroy the financial records he obtained from the Commonwealth Bank's eWay system.
