An elderly man had once allegedly thrown rocks through the windows of a Victorian barber shop owned by his neighbour, who is accused of stabbing the 68-year-old to death after a dispute.

Police were called to a home on Murray Road in Preston around 5pm yesterday and found Donato Galgano, 68, lying unconscious in a pool of blood.

He died at the scene a short time afterwards, allegedly from stab wounds.

Police allege 35-year-old neighbour Tony Papadimitriou attacked Mr Galgano after an altercation on the footpath.

“We are aware that there have been some disputes between the two parties,” Senior Sergeant Justin Goldsmith said.

The pair had been neighbours for years.

Mr Papadimitriou has been charged with murder and remained silent when he faced a Melbourne court today.

He has been remanded in custody.

Neighbours told 9NEWS Mr Galgano had been the subject of several complaints made to police, and said they were rattled by his death.

“It’s shocking, I’m still trembling. I didn’t sleep last night,” a female neighbour told 9NEWS.
