Former US vice president Al Gore has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Melbourne.

The university awarded Mr Gore the award at a ceremony in Melbourne on Thursday night, in recognition of his efforts to tackle man-made global warming

"Mr Gore has worked for decades to empower all people to participate in the conversation about effective, urgent and just climate change action," University of Melbourne Chancellor Allan Myers said on Thursday night.

"During his current visit to Melbourne for the EcoCity Summit, we took the opportunity to award him this degree as recognition of his efforts to promote action and solutions to the challenges of climate change."

Mr Gore is in Australia ahead of the release of An Inconvenient Sequel, the follow up to his Oscar-winning 2006 documentary on global warming, and he addressed the Melbourne summit on Thursday morning.
