200 workers at Vic Woolworths protest

Two hundred Woolworths workers are blockading a Melbourne distribution centre in a dispute over casual labour hire.

The Laverton liquor distribution centre has been shut down since Monday morning, with trucks prevented from entering or leaving.

A National Union of Workers spokeswoman said workers were unhappy about Woolworths introducing casual labour hire and changes to work practices.

Workers went into a meeting with management about midday and were told they would get a response after 1pm.

The NUW said it was still waiting for managers at the distribution centre to respond.

A Woolworths spokeswoman said the company isn't making any change to its recruiting or retention practices.

"We are in the process of arranging our Christmas staffing arrangements in our distribution chain, a routine practice we undertake across all distribution centres," the spokeswoman said.

"Today's illegal action is disappointing. We will continue to work with the unions and staff to address their concerns."

Woolworths said it expected the matter to be heard before the Fair Work Commission on Tuesday morning.
