Fossil fuel protests at Melbourne Uni

Students and staff at Melbourne University have continued calls for the school to drop investments in fossil fuel companies.

Protesters handed a petition to the university secretary on Wednesday as part of a national day of action.

"It's time for Australian universities to put their money where their mouth is and get the buck out of fossil fuels," campaign co-ordinator Vicky Fysh said.

The Australian National University sold its shares in two mining companies last year, prompting a barrage of criticism from some federal MPs.

A University of Melbourne spokesman said the university's position hadn't changed since last year.

"The investment management committee at the uni is continuing to review the position on divestment and they're going to make their review and report on that and take it to the university council some time this year," he told AAP.
