New rewards for unsolved Victorian murders will be set at $1 million.

It follows a review by Chief Commissioner Ken Lay in June which found the current reward system was unnecessarily complex, with possible inequities in amounts.

A police spokesman said all rewards offered from Saturday would align with the maximum penalty for their particular crime.

Rewards tied to Level 1 crimes attracting life imprisonment, such as murder, will be set at $1 million.

Level 2 crimes with 25 years' jail will get reward amounts of $350,000-$500,000, while Level 3 crimes would be $250,000-$350,000.

"Rewards send a clear message that we are determined to bring those responsible to justice and it is our hope that as circumstances in the lives of people who have information about these crimes changes, that they do come forward and provide information to police," the police spokesman said.

Older cases in which rewards have been offered will be reviewed, with a view to have their amounts increased.
