A teenager has suffered horrific burns after her car burst into flames at a Melbourne service station.

The 19-year-old Langwarrin woman's car exploded in flames in the car park of a BP service station on Saturday afternoon, a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

The woman, badly injured, fled the car and ran inside, where service station staff and workers from an adjoining takeaway outlet ran to her aid.

"It looks like the woman ran into the service station and staff put her into a shower (to treat her burns) before ambulance crews arrived," she said.

The woman was rushed to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition.

Country Fire Authority crews extinguished the car fire.

There were no other injuries and no further damage reported.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
