Funding boost for Melbourne trauma centre

Doctors, nurses and researchers in emergency at The Alfred hospital have saved thousands of lives and a funding boost will help them communicate information about patients faster and better as they work.

Health Minister Sussan Ley says the team at The Alfred's emergency and trauma centre have become world leaders in what they do.

"Ten years ago if you had a ruptured heart on the side of the road in road trauma you were more likely to die than live" Health Minister Sussan Ley told reporters.

She says that has improved.

The federal government has announced a $450,000 funding package over three years for the hospital's trauma registry.

The registry is expected to improve communication across Australia's 27 trauma centres by collecting and sharing patient information.
