A patient who escaped from a treatment centre in Melbourne's north where he was undergoing a compulsory program after committing serious offences has handed himself into police.

Justin Fraser, 37, fled from the carpark of the Disability Forensic Assessment and Treatment Service in Fairfield at 11am (AEDT) on Thursday.

He remains in police custody after walking into Collingwood Police Station on Thursday evening.

Police said Mr Fraser was in breach of parole to undergo compulsory treatment for serious indictable offences.
