Vic killer loses conviction appeal bid

A woman jailed for murdering a friend after he drew pictures mocking her as fat during a drunken binge has lost a bid to appeal her conviction.

Boronika Gam Hothnyang was jailed for 14 years for stabbing William Awu to death at her Dandenong home in 2011 after a two-day drinking binge.

She applied for leave to appeal her conviction, arguing the trial judge erred by accepting evidence that was prejudicial about her, including her drunk and aggressive behaviour before and after the killing.

Her defence also argued no properly instructed jury could have been satisfied she was the killer or that she intended to kill.

But the Court of Appeal rejected the grounds for appeal on Friday.

Both Hothnyang and Mr Awu, 26, had fled war-torn Sudan hoping for a better life in Australia.

However, when he mocked her by drawing pictures making her look "like a barrel, big and fat" she lashed out and stabbed him in the chest.

Hothnyang will serve a minimum 10-and-a-half years before being eligible for parole.
