Vic govt worried about jobs: Shorten

Federal Opposition leader Bill Shorten says the Victorian Liberal Party is concerned about the federal government not standing up for jobs.

He said a lack of industry policy and an "inability to stand up for jobs" were factors in the "upset" SA election result which leaves Labor Premier Jay Weatherill a chance of retaining government.

Asked if this could have implications for the Victorian election in November, Mr Shorten said more people were working in automotive jobs in Victoria than in SA.

"Jobs and cuts are big issues," Mr Shorten told reporters on Sunday.

"I think the Victorian Liberals are very concerned with the Abbott government's extreme ideology of just `leave everything to market forces and not stand up for jobs'.

"It's greatly disturbing."

His comments came as the SA election result remained too close to call.

One of the last polls leading up to the election had put the Liberals just ahead at 52.3 per cent, with Labor at 47.7 per cent.

"There is no doubt in my mind that the lack of the Abbott government's industry policy, the inability of the Abbott government to fight for jobs ... was a factor in the upset result last night in SA," Mr Shorten said.
