Vic govt records mid-year $351m deficit
The Victorian government has recorded a $351 million deficit in mid-year results, but says it remains on track to reach a budget surplus.
Treasurer Michael O'Brien unveiled the results in his 2013-14 mid-year financial report tabled in the Victorian parliament on Thursday.
The report shows that in the six months to December 31, 2013, the general government sector recorded a $351.1 million deficit.
But finances are on track to record a net surplus of more than $200 million in 2013-14, he says.
"The Coalition government is on track to deliver a record level of government infrastructure spending, boosting job creation right across Victoria," Mr O'Brien said.
Victoria remained the only government in Australia to deliver a surplus each and every year across the forward estimates, he said.
"Our track record of strong economic management means Victoria has maintained a AAA credit rating with a stable outlook from both international ratings agencies the only state to do so," Mr O'Brien said.
