Up to 4000 litres of aviation fuel has leaked from a damaged pipeline that runs along railway lines in a Melbourne suburb.

About 30 firefighters were called to the site of the fuel spill in the suburb of Sunshine in Melbourne's west just before 1.30pm on Sunday.

Between 1000-4000 litres of fuel had leaked from a damaged pipe running along the lines.

Exxon Mobil representatives were also on site to give advice.

Some rail services were affected.

Crews isolated the fuel leak and blanketed it in foam.

The incident took 50 minutes to bring under control.

Firefighters remain at the scene while an industrial vacuum truck removes the spilt fuel.
