Firefighters have worked for more than six hours to contain a chemical spill at a food crate manufacturing site in Melbourne's west.
Firefighters are neutralising a sanitising agent called Oxyzan ZS after it leaked from a container at a factory in Laverton North after 4pm (AEDT).
Melbourne Fire Brigade spokesman Steve Aicher said that roughly 700 litres of the chemical leaked through a pump on the container.

He said firefighters would remove the chemical when it was safe to do so.
