Dog wearing marriage equality scarf allegedly kicked at by 'No' voter

A dog wearing an "Equality" bandana supporting same-sex marriage has been attacked in a Melbourne park by a person shouting homophobic slurs, its owner claims.

The man allegedly tried to kick the dog - named Mack - who was walking in a park in Yarraville with a dog sitter last night.

Mack's owner, Claire Sutherland, posted on Twitter that the man, who she described as a "mouth-breathing cretin", was "shouting homophobic slurs" as he targeted the dog.

The kick did not connect, Ms Sutherland said on Twitter.

"He's totally fine," she said. 

"(The) kick didn't connect and our dog sitter gave the guy a mouthful.

"Didn't sway him on his vote at all!"

The alleged attack is the latest in a string of recent incidents related to the postal survey. Earlier this week the resident of a Brisbane home adorned with signs supporting marriage equality had rocks thrown through their window. Another three homes, all displaying rainbow flags, were sprayed painted with swastika graffiti.

In Sydney photos surfaced of a train with homophobic slurs scrawled across it. "Vote no! to f--s," it read, alongside the numbers 2200 - the postcode for Bankstown  and Condell Park.
