Vic crime tip-offs at all-time high

A crime-fighting charity in Victoria is celebrating a bumper year of community tip-offs it says has led to a record-breaking number of resulting arrests.

Crime Stoppers Victoria says it received more than 81,000 phone and online reports during 2016, leading to 1541 arrests and 5599 charges being laid across the state.

The volunteer organisation also reports that information it collected during 2016 resulted in the seizure of $7,109,855 worth of drugs, $1,836,768 worth of property and $344,161 in cash.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton says Crime Stoppers, which is now entering its 30th year, plays a vital role in solving crime.

"Through them the community helps locate missing people, and solve burglaries, drug trafficking, homicides and everything in between," he said in a statement.
