The number of child protection applications to Victoria's Children's Court has risen.

More than 12,000 child protection applications were initiated in 2012-13, up about 300 on the previous year.

The figures are contained in the Children's Court of Victoria annual report tabled in parliament on Wednesday.

Former Children's Court president, Judge Paul Grant, described the rise in notifications as "modest" compared with the year before.

But the rise did lead to delays of up to 12 weeks in cases that weren't resolved early on, he said.
