Vibe of the thing: Palmer on pensions bill

It's the vibe of the thing.

That's how federal MP Clive Palmer is explaining a private member's bill he plans to move in the lower house despite having little detail about.

The mining magnate wants to ensure politicians won't be able to access their superannuation any earlier than the general public can once the pension age rises to 70 in 2035.

Mr Palmer says that will ensure politicians also do some heavy lifting after Tuesday's budget, which is expected to confirm details of the age pension rise.

But he couldn't explain how the bill will effect current politicians, given the pension changes won't affect those born before 1965.

"We haven't drafted the bill. We're just going to the spirit of it," Mr Palmer told reporters in Canberra.

The "spirit" of it?

"One year before you die, one hour before you die, you'll be able to access your super and your old age pension," Mr Palmer said.

"So it's only fair that members of parliament should have the same conditions."

Mr Palmer's bill is the latest move aimed at attracting seniors to his Palmer United Party.

He's already promised free party membership and vowed to block the legislation raising the pension access age in the Senate, where his party will play a crucial role after July 1.
