Vega Vega fights for pay while suspended

A Queensland doctor alleged to have botched several operations is demanding a judicial review of the decision to suspend him without pay.

Rockhampton urologist Antonio Vega Vega is being investigated by the Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service after he removed the wrong kidney from a young woman.

He is also alleged, in separate operations, to have misdiagnosed a twisted testicle, causing it to be ultimately removed, nicked a surgical patient's artery, and wrongly positioned a stent.

The surgeon was suspended without pay from the Rockhampton Hospital in May and restrictions were placed on his ability to practise. The restrictions were lifted on appeal in June.

Dr Vega Vega has applied to the Supreme Court for a review of the health service's decision to suspend him without pay pending the outcome of its investigation.

He was previously told he would be suspended on full pay.

In court documents filed on Tuesday, the doctor said the decision was a breach of natural justice and prevented him carrying out his professional work and receiving his usual income.

The case has been set down for a directions hearing on August 8.
