Stolen ute smashes through supermarket in Melbourne's west

Police are investigating a ram raid in Melbourne's west after a stolen ute smashed through the front window of a supermarket.

At 4.30 this morning two men in a stolen Ford Ranger reversed into the shopfront of the Werribee IGA in a failed attempt to steal an ATM.

The thieves abandoned their efforts when the car became impaled on the surrounding bollards.

The two men are believed to have fled in a stolen Toyota Hilux parked nearby with the licence plate ICT3RP.

Chains used in the ram raid were found dumped on the roof of a primary school.

Werribee IGA staff member Chloe Goodwin arrived at work to find the storefront in pieces.

"It's just stupid, there's no point to it, just go out and work mate," she said.

Detective Senior Constable Lindsay Lee said it has caused a lot of damage as well as considerable loss of income.

"They've had to close the store today ... I think it's appalling," she said.

Thieves have previously attempted to target the store's ATM by smashing a window but were unsuccessful also.
