'Never an excuse': Abusing retail workers could land you in jail, union warns
Shoppers have been warned that abusing retail staff over the Christmas period could result in legal repercussions, including jail time.
Recent data shows that one in ten retail employees face physical abuse on the job, with over 75 per cent subject to verbal abuse, according to data from the retail union, the SDA.
The union has warned customers that they can and will take legal action against anyone found to be abusive towards staff during the holiday period.

"There is never an excuse to abuse retail workers who are just doing their job," SDA NSW Secretary Bernie Smith said.
"Retail workers deserve our thanks and respect, even more so at this time of year when the shops are busy, and tensions are high.
"But we know the reality is very different. Customer abuse is rife in Australian shopping centres, and this must change."
"This is the first Christmas season where shoppers will face serious criminal consequences specifically for abusing workers.
"We hope customers do the right thing and that it doesn't have to come to this."
Laws passed in New South Wales in June introduced tougher penalties for people found to be abusive towards staff members, making it a criminal offence under the Crimes Act 1900.
The crime carries a maximum of 11 years in prison for causing grievous bodily harm to a retail worker.

Customers found harassing, intimidating or abusing staff can face up to four years in prison, even if the worker is not physically harmed.
"Retail workers have been spat on, yelled at, hit with objects, and more. Many workers are also subject to sexual harassment from some customers. It's outrageous," Smith said.
"We asked the public why this happens? Too many said 'Because there are no consequences for bad behaviour in shops'.
"Well, now there are consequences. Abuse or assault a retail worker and you could face between 4-11 years imprisonment. Just treat us with respect."
