UK mum credits new multiple sclerosis treatment with helping her walk again

A UK woman who lives with multiple sclerosis has credited a new stem cell treatment with giving her back the ability to walk.

Sheffield mum Holly Drewry told the BBC the experience was a “miracle”, after the condition left her unable to walk after the birth of her daughter Isla.

“I couldn’t walk steadily. I couldn’t trust myself holding her, in case I fell. Being a new mum, I wanted to do it all properly, but my MS was stopping me from doing it,” she said.

The treatment uses a high dose of chemotherapy to weaken the immune system, before replenishing it with healthy stem cells, taken from the patient’s blood.

Ms Drewry said she felt different within days of receiving the treatment at Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

“It was a bit overwhelming. It was a miracle,” she said.
