Whale and calf stranded off Queensland coast

Rescue crews have responded to a humpback whale calf and another whale that have become stranded off the Queensland coast.

The newborn whale, believed to be about six weeks old, was found washed ashore in Hervey Bay this morning.

Researchers from the Pacific Whale Foundation have tended to the calf, and are yet to determine the cause of the stranding.

According to foundation founder Greg Kaufman, the calf has a “slim” chance of surviving without its mother.

Meanwhile, rescue crews have responded to a separate incident involving a stranded whale off Brisbane’s coast.

A 9NEWS helicopter captured vision of the larger animal, which appears to have become caught on a sandbar near Peel Island in Moreton Bay.

The condition of the whale is not known.
