Two trams have collided in Melbourne's city centre, causing other carriages to bank up on Collins Street.

The route 109 Box Hill and route 12 St Kilda trams hit each other outside Southern Cross Station at the intersection of Spencer and Collins streets at around 9am.

A door was smashed on one tram but no one was injured.

Yarra Trams said neither tram had derailed but an investigation was underway into how the trams collided.

The collision has caused delays on routes 11, 12, 48, 109 and 96.

The damage was cleared by 10.15am, with both trams and cars allowed through the intersection again.
