Two men suffer burns after car explodes in western Sydney

Two men are recovering in hospital tonight with burns after a car exploded in a western Sydney street, with fire investigators probing whether a gas cylinder in the boot of the vehicle was to blame.

Emergency services were called to Gascoigne Road, Yagoona, around 1pm after the silver Mazda became engulfed in flames. 

A 52-year-old man suffered burns to 15-20 percent of his body, while another man, 42, suffered burns to 10 percent of his body.

“I heard two loud explosions and saw black smoke,” witness Peter Phillips told 9NEWS.

“My wife’s a nurse so she went over and started treating them while we waited for the ambulance and just kept people away while the fire brigade got here.”

Both men were taken to hospital and are recovering in a stable condition.

Fire investigators believe a gas cylinder in the boot of the vehicle may have been responsible for the blast.
