Horror NT smash leaves truckie with burns to 70 percent of body

An Northern Territory truckie has been left with burns to more than 70 percent of his body after a horrific smash that saw two road trains collide near Darwin today.

The two road trains collided on Berrimah Road at East Arm, near Darwin.

One vehicle was engulfed in flames following the crash and the truck's driver suffered extensive injuries.

The driver of the second truck was assessed for relatively minor burns and is believed to have assisted the other, more seriously injured, driver from his cab.

Emergency services are still at the scene and nearby roads were blocked off for much of the afternoon.

Police have now re-opened one lane of Berrimah Road, allowing traffic to flow into and out of the East Arm Port area.

Paramedics told the NT News one truck driver suffered "severe" burns, believed to have covered up to 70 percent of his body.

Motorists are still being urged to avoid the area.
