Man drowns, woman fighting for life after pulled from Bondi Beach

The man is understood to be in cardiac arrest. (9NEWS) 

A man has drowned and a woman is fighting for life after being pulled from the surf at Sydney's Bondi Beach this afternoon.

9NEWS understands the man, 69, and woman, 66, were pulled unconscious from the water about 4.45pm.

Lifeguards performed CPR on the pair before emergency services arrived.

The man went into cardiac arrest and could not be revived.

The woman has been taken to St Vincent's Hospital where she remains in a critical but stable condition.

Swimmers told 9NEWS there was a strong current at the beach today.

The man and woman are international tourists who are related to each other and were at the beach with a number of friends.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner and police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.
